T&T ELECTION CAMPAIGN FOR CEDAW COMMITTEE
Ms. Jacqueline Johnson, Permanent Secretary, Office of the Prime Minister (Gender and Child Affairs) along with technical officers met with Her Excellency Ambassador Penelope Beckles, Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations, and officers from the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs. Discussions were held concerning the campaign strategy for the candidature of Professor Rhoda Reddock and her prospective membership on the UN Commission on the Elimination of Violence Against Women (CEDAW) for the period 2019-2022.
The election is scheduled for June 7th, 2018 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Professor Reddock is competing against fifteen (15) candidates for one of the twelve (12) available seats on the Committee. Candidates are elected by secret ballot in an absolute majority of votes of State Parties present. Professor Reddock’s success in this election will see Trinidad and Tobago represented on the CEDAW Committee, one of the foremost mechanisms worldwide for the promotion of human rights and the elimination of discrimination against women. For the next four (4) years, the selected countries will assist other States Parties in improving their human rights record, and providing women and girls with equal access to opportunities for growth and development.
