Public Education and Information Fair
Port of Spain: The Office of the Prime Minister in partnership with the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) hosted a Public Education and Information Fair on Friday 24th November 2017. The event was held in commemoration of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (IDEVAW) which is recognized annually on November 25th.
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (IDEVAW) signals the start of the 16 Days of Activism which ends on December 10th, Human Rights Day. In observance of the 16 Days of Activism and this year’s theme: ‘Leave No One Behind – End Violence against Women and Girls’, a number of stakeholders and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) were invited to promote their programmes and services and a signature campaign was also launched. The audience was invited to write statements in support and solidarity for the elimination of all forms of violence. Members of the public were also encouraged to wear orange, which is the colour symbolic of the United Nations end the violence campaigns.
The feature address was delivered by the Honourable Ayanna Webster-Roy, Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, who reminded the audience to “think of the unnecessary and preventable hurt that is inflicted in our society. Think of the image it portrays. Think of how we are perceived as a people! Now think about what you will do to create a better image and change people’s perception!” Also addressing the gathering were Mr. Ronald Jagessar, Deputy General Manager, PTSC and Mr. Richard Blewitt, United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative.
We would like to thank all the stakeholders for their participation and aid in making today’s event a success as well as the United Nations Systems in Trinidad and Tobago for their never ending support in these initiatives. Special thanks goes out to Ms. Ceronne Bayley who gave words of inspiration and Ms. Zakiya Gill who delivered a spoken word piece entitled ‘Bittersweet'. The Office of the Prime Minister through its Gender Affairs Division, Child Affairs Unit and the National AIDs Coordinating Committee (NACC) looks forward to the continued support of all its stakeholders in its drive to create a better, more empowered and safer Trinidad and Tobago.
